HMRC lets employees down on car tax codes

In his latest letter to stakeholders, HMRC’s David Ellis has admitted that P46(car) forms were not processed from April of this year due to the ongoing problems with the National Insurance & PAYE Service system (NPS) and the need to correct annual codes. A number of taxpayers had queried with HMRC why their code had not been amended once their employer had informed HMRC that they had been given, or had a car removed, since the start of this tax year.

End of year late filing concession scrapped

HMRC have announced that for payroll year end P35 and P14 returns for 2010/11 they will charge a penalty if these are not received by 19th May. Since 1995 HMRC have operated extra statutory concession B46 that allows for a further seven days after 19th May before penalties for late filing are charged. The concession was designed to allow for postal delays, but as the vast majority of employers must now file online it is no longer necessary.

New company car fuel rates effective today

The following new advisory fuel rates, often referred to by HMRC as AFRs, apply to journeys undertaken on and after 1 June 2010 (the rates from 1 December 2009 are in brackets). Advisory fuel rates are provided by HMRC for employers, if they choose, to reimburse their employees for business travel in company cars, or to require employees to reimburse the cost of fuel used for private travel in a company car without attracting a fuel benefit charge.

Is the cloud simply the pie-in-the-sky?

Everyone everywhere is talking about cloud computing. The online, on-demand provision of IT resources is expected to be the next big thing.

Attend any conference and the message is the same: everything technology-related is moving to the cloud. Gartner suggests cloud computing will take such a stranglehold on the market that one fifth of businesses will own absolutely no IT assets by 2012.

My mother is full of age-old wisdom and sayings. One that was often heard through-out my teenage years was ” You will be judged by the company you keep”, mainly used to discourage me from falling into the wrong crowd and to get me to concentrate on where I wanted to be in the future.
